What Does "Discovering" Mean to Me?

What Does ‘Discovery’ Mean?
In the Discovery Center, we were asked to think about what discovery means. Discovery means finding something and making things. It is making something new like a time machine. It is also like finding a lost island and naming it. Maybe I will find lost treasure. I really like to discover.

Crusie Arcade Game - Ocean Maze:

What Makes an Effective Professional Arcade Game?

The professional arcade game I researched is called Nibblet. The company that supports the game is Camadro, Inc. The instructions are easy. You just use arrow keys to guide the worm through the maze. The worm must eat all the dots, but at the same time you must avoid the worm’s ever growing tail! When you win, you go to the next level. It is a fun little game where you eat all the pebbles and the big blue pebble gets rid of the tail. Press enter to toggle music on and off. The rules are displayed under the game!
To build it you use a small maze made of cardboard, a marble, and danger zones. If you want to create the game it costs up to $10 to build it. To buy this game I think it is $40-$75.

The game I played is called Nibblet. It is found at:

Design Brief
What is the Concept Design of my Crusie Arcade Game?

The name of the game is Ocean Maze. You play the game by tilting the box. You could get the ball in the blue circle and win extra tickets! The rules are going to be displayed on the front of the maze. The star rating is 3-stars out of 4 out of 1-4 rating system. You win by making it to the finish line. If you win the game you can get tickets. Then come to Olivia or Ellie and you can get candy.

Yes, we can describe the blueprint briefly, and it is easy. It looks like a little fish in a big ocean with a squid and crazy things coming at the fish.

The materials we need to build our game are cardboard, tape, string, and foam. We think it will take a long time to build this game, but it will be fun! What we think the problem will be is try not to make the walls fall down while they are playing the game.

What were the Results of Testing Our Game?
Examiner: Ms. Pinkard

Date: 1/31/13

Praise: I like that you thought of an original game with an ocean theme.

Question: Could you give extra points if they finish faster?

Polish: Try putting more obstacles in more places to make the game more difficult.

Student Comment: Thanks for the comments! We mixed an ocean theme with two original arcade games, Pacman\Nibblet, to get Ocean Maze. Well, right now we already do give extra points when people play Ocean Maze. I wanted to put more obstacles in our game, but Olivia did not want to have more obstacles in the game. My idea for more obstacles for the game is putting shelves in the game to make stairs.

Examiner: Mr. Holgate

Date: 1/29/13

Praise: It really is a well-constructed, intricate device. I think the game itself is a lot of fun and people want to play it.

Question: How will you give out the tickets? Will you allow them the turn it upside down?

Polish: Think about making the ‘bad’ zones a game ender.

Student Comment: Thanks a lot! We put a lot of work on Ocean Maze - everything in the game from the holes to the tickets. When the people are playing we will have the tickets with us to give to them when the game is over. When the kids are playing our game we will not allow them to turn our game upside down while they play. When we were deciding what to do for the “bad” zone I wanted the “bad” zone to be a game ender, but Olivia wanted the people to have another try.

Examiner: Mrs. Burkom

Date: 2/5/13

Praise: Cute game.

Question: {No question asked}

Polish: Shortest route is not necessarily the goal.

Student Comment: Thank you for the comments, we really appreciate it! Even though it looks good we tried to make Ocean Maze more colorful by coloring the game. We did not have a lot of time to do it and it will look strange if we do half of it. We know having the shortest route is not the goal; if you go that way there are less tickets. The shortest route is not the goal of the game.

This is what we can do to make Ocean Maze even better. We can add a lot more color to the game, make it harder to play, and give away fewer prizes. We can do this by painting some blues and greens on the game, adding more walls and bag holes, and by having fewer ticket points in the game. We can make the prizes more expensive. During the building I learned some things like learning to trust others, and they will trust me. I also learned how to make a game out of cardboard, but that was at the end of the building. I also learned to build a bigger and better friendship. I liked that Mr. May put us in pairs and that we could choose to do any game we wanted to make. We could have chosen a different game, but we liked ours a lot.

How Can We Make the Crusie Arcade Game Better?

Guiding Question: How Can We Make the Crusie Arcade Game Better?

Reflection on Project

What can we do to improve our Arcade Creation?

We can add a lot more color the game, make it harder, and give fewer prizes.

Specifically, how would we do this?

We can do this by painting some blues and greens on the game, adding more walls and bag holes, and by having fewer ticket points in the game and making the prizes more expensive.

Reflection on Process

What did you learn to do with the Crusie Arcade Project?

I learned to trust others and they will trust me.

What do you know now that you didn’t know before doing the Project?

I learned to make a game out of cardboard.

What can you do now that you couldn’t before doing this project?

I also learned to build a bigger and better friendship.

What did you like about the project that helped your learning?

I liked that Mr. May put us in pairs and that we could choose to do any game we wanted to make.

What could have been done differently to help your learning?

We could have chosen a different game, but we liked ours a lot.

A Final Reflection:

This is what we can do to make Ocean Maze even better. We can add a lot more color to the game, make it harder to play, and give away fewer prizes. We can do this by painting some blues and greens on the game, adding more walls and bag holes, and by having fewer ticket points in the game. We can make the prizes more expensive.
